The Plakat Trilogy (Author: Joep van Esch) (Date Submitted: 4/19/2008) We currently have three PKs types which are accepted at the different shows around the world. In this article I would like to share my personal view on the different types of shortfinned bettas we know today. I hope this article will give you more insight in the different PK types and their standards. Please keep in mind that this article will partly overlap with the current IBC standards for PKs.
Breeding Plakats (Author: Lijian) (Date Submitted: 9/29/2004) To condition plakats mean to get them ready to breed and produce more plakats for you. In conditioning, there are certain points to keep in mind such as how long to condition the fish and what to do when conditioning them.
The Fighter Plakat (Author: Precha Jintasaerewonge) (Date Submitted: 9/29/2004) My intention for reprinting this article was mainly for historical note, and to answer questions about the selective breeding process of the Siamese Fighting Fish in Thailand.
Conditioning Fighters (Author: Precha) (Date Submitted: 9/29/2004) The natures of Bettas are calm, protective and residential. They become aggressive only to protect their own territory. This is the reason why Bettas are kept separately from other fishes. Bettas will react quite aggressive if any fish enter to their area by spreading its' fin to scare them off (except the female Bettas, of course).
Knowing Your Fighter (Author: Precha Jintasaerewonge) (Date Submitted: 7/1/2004) The fighting fish game was originated and developed in Thailand many years ago. In Thailand, the fish has been raised in households since the Sukhothai Period, more than 700 years ago. Records from the reign of King Lithai of Sukhothai allude to fighting fish being reared for sport.
Proposal For New Plakat Standard (Author: Joep van Esch) (Date Submitted: 4/19/2008) Shortfinned bettas have gained much popularity in the betta world because of their compact, vital appearance. They often also have the advantage above longfinned betas in that are more able to carry their finnage throughout their live and are less prone to finrot. Shortfinned bettas, also known as plakats are finnage-wise the closest related to the wildtype form of Betta splendens. For ages, Thai breeders bred this form from wild caught bettas in order to develop its fighting nature, style, hardiness, size and color. This practice of selective breeding stood at the base of the different colors and tail types we know today.
Proposal For Adjustment of the IBC Plakat Standards (Author: Joep van Esch) (Date Submitted: 4/19/2008) Show standards will always be subject to change and are influenced by what is being bred in the world. This way new and higher goals are set. By now the IBC has members from all parts of the world and if we want to set a good high quality standard which will be accepted by breeders worldwide it is important to involve these breeders in this discussion.

. HEJSAN FROM SWEDEN EVERYONE! Everything in Sweden is going well, although I'm still busy learning the language and coping with a newborn, so it will be a bit before I'm as active as I'd like with the fish. This is a Facebook update! I have created a new BettySplendens Facebook page that will be used exclusively for betta-related networking. On the 16th of August I will be going through and deleting most of the people on my personal Facebook page who are not actual friends or family (many of you have become friends through the course of the hobby, and of course will not be deleted). If for any reason you wish to remain on my personal page, please let me know by emailing bettysplendens@yahoo.com, or FB email. Otherwise, go to the new BettySplendens Facebook page and click the 'like' button for more betta-related news and updates :).
Tack så mycket (that's ''Thank you very much'' in Svenskie-land ;))! ~Victoria~
Slight change of plans! I have decided that, instead of reinventing the wheel, I'm going to create a personal FB page and use the old one purely for betta stuff. So if you're on the original page (now called BettySplendens Bettas), please stay put! :P
For all the betta inquiries: Just a reminder, I am not selling bettas in the US at the present time. I may begin to supply a few select bettas throughout Europe sometime in late Spring 2011. Cheers!
Spotting the Orange Dalmatian Ever since it first started being widely seen in pet stores around late 2004, the spotted orange betta has taken the hobby by storm. But what exactly is it?
Finnage Variations Bettas today come in a wide variety of forms, and new ones are being created all the time. Here are the most popular.
Choosing a Betta There are basically three ways of purchasing bettas. Buying them from a pet store, buying them from a breeder, or buying them online. I'll run through some important things to consider in each of those options.
Defining a Good Crowntail For the purpose of showing in the CT class, Crowntails are defined as bettas exhibiting at least 33% reduction in webbing versus ray length in each of the three primary fins (caudal, anal and dorsal). This requirement must be demonstrated in all three primary fins but does not need to be exhibited between all rays to meet the minimum requirement to be classified as a Crowntail betta.
